On 'Ethnic Notions'
I'm curious how many of the minstrel performers, animators, and artists who created content containing blackface and established these stereotypes and ideas in the public mind did it intentionally and with prejudice. Many black performers still had to use blackface and depict themselves in these distorted images that obviously probably don't align with their own views but that's simply the only way they could find success as entertainers. I wonder if that sentiment was shared with some white creators and performers who may not have held such prejudice but were playing to an audience that was only satisfied by racial jokes and the misrepresentation and disrespect of black people. Did the audience form the hateful art or did the hateful art foster an audience? (Most likely both at once)
